The Doctor and Rose travel back to 19th-century Scotland, where they encounter Queen Victoria and discover the sinister plot of an order of warrior monks. Meanwhile, local legends of a werewolf prowling the Highlands turn out to be more fact than fiction.

Mickey calls the Doctor and Rose back to Earth to look into the strange problems at a school that is exhibiting peculiar goings on. The Doctor, posing as teacher, and Rose, as a cafeteria worker, seek to find out what the situation is. They are surprised when one of the Doctora 's old companions, Sarah Jane Smith, and her robot dog, K-9, appear, to investigate the same peculiarities. What they find is an alien race trying to use the young students to solve a code they sorely need to move up an evolutionary step. The Doctor must defeat their attempt, while side stepping questions Sarah Jane Smith has about why the earlier incarnation of the Doctor abandoning her, to never, until now, be seen again. This causes Rose to wonder if this might be her future fate, too.

Madame de Pompadour, the official mistress of King Louis XV, has been haunted by recurring dreams of the Doctor since childhood. When the King’s palace comes under attack from sinister clockwork robots, she attempts to summon him in an effort to protect its inhabitants from the mechanical killers.

The TARDIS appears to die after the Doctor performs a recalibration. The TARDIS lands in London, but in an alternate universe. The Doctor works some magic, and says the TARDIS will be revived in about 24 hours, but he cana 't stop Rose and Mickey from investigating the alternate reality. What they find is not what they expect. No one knows who the are, or knows them differently. Plus, they learn a vastly rich and powerful madman, bent on extending his crippled life, is experimenting on creating cybernetic robots out of humans. He is also intent on upgrading all humans into this cybernetic life form, to be known as Cybermen. However, they also learn that not everyone is compatible for this upgrade, and must be exterminated. The Doctor, Rose and Mickey find they fall into this latter group. Can they survive after they are surrounded by these new unstoppable Cybermen?

The Doctor, Rose, Mickey, Mickeya 's alternate Ricky, and Rosea 's alternate father, are cornered by the now activated Cybermen, but are able to escape their impending deletion when the Doctor uses his sonic screwdriver to a deadly effect. The Doctor and team then join up with a resistance group they have met up with, that has been fighting this evil plan for awhile. It also appears that Mickeya 's alternate reality double, Ricky, is the fearless leader of the group. The Doctor convinces them that the best plan is to divide the group up into three parts, and attack in three places, the location that the soon to be a upgradeda London population is being lead to, via their cybernetic ear pieces everyone has been wearing for news and entertainment purposes for years. Can the Doctor solve the answer on how to stop the Cybermen? Can Rose help her alternate father save her alternate mother, neither of which know who she is, from the Cybermen? And can the meekish Mickey find the courage to help in defeating this terrible enemy force along side his fearless alternate, Ricky?

In the 1950s, at the time of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the Earth is invaded by aliens using TV waves, taking advantage of the millions of people watching the coronation.

The Doctor and Rose arrive in a very odd place, where even the TARDIS cana 't translate certain writings they find; something the Doctor has never seen happen before. They find a crew of humans, working in a planetary outpost, who tell them they are investigating the mysterious planeta 's ability to remain in orbit around a Black Hole. Something that is quite impossible! They find the human crew is attempting to learn the source of the ultimate power that keeps this planet out of reach of the forces of a Black Hole, which is drawing in surrounding solar systems. The power source of the planet appears to be located at the planeta 's center, under miles of hard rock. But, then after one of many reoccurring earthquakes destroys the section of the base the TARDIS materialized in, the Doctor and Rose must accept that they may have no means of escape, or return to any other time or space. And even worse, an evil force, and not technology, might be behind the planeta 's unexplainable power to orbit the Black Hole.

The Doctor and one of the Earth crewman become stranded deep under the planet, near an even deeper strange chasm. The Doctor decides to make a leap of faith, while depending on Rose, still with the rest of the crew trying to leave the mysterious planet, will do the right thing. Only if they both succeed in what they need to do, will they all survive the evil intentions of the creature that may be the real Satan, whom is intent on reclaiming his throne on Earth.

A young man, Elton, makes a personal video about his encounters with aliens and the Doctor. It seems his first encounter with the Doctor was when Elton was a child. He also tells of a small group that was formed to collect information on the Doctor, which meets every week. The group has a lot of fun each week; that is until a strange man appears and he transforms the group into a search for the Doctor. However, all is not right with this stranger and his strange ways. Plus, what will the stranger do should they find the Doctor.
